Cool App – B.iCycle app captures trip info – Google Earth adds the details

I love this app… working out is hard work! So, I'm for anything you can do to make it more fun = B.iCycle app. Not only does this iPhone app tell you how fast you were going, how many feet you climbed and of course the all important how many calories you burned, it also provides you with code that Google Earth uses to create a visual map of your path.

Today I discovered a cool Google Earth feature that plots out the elevation of your trip… how cool is that? If it weren't 90 degrees and I weren't so out of shape, I'd be out there creating more data with the B.iCycle app.

2009 the year of the bank failures. Visualization of US bank failures 2000-2009

2009 will go down in the record books for many things – bank failures included. During the year 140 banks failed ~~setting a record since the 1930s~~. It appears that the record number of bank failures was recorded in 1989 at 531 bank failures.

Eighteen states made it through the year without a single bank failure. These states include:

Alaska, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont and West Virginia.

Unfortunately, 2009 has been a banner year for bank closures. So far, 106 banks have failed costing the FDIC billions. The following is an up-to-date list as of October 23, 2009 of the failed banks in the United States as published by the FDIC .

B.iCycle – a fun iPhone app for the casual biker

There are a number of apps in the itunes store for tracking miles while riding your bike, but I choose B.icycle. Dispite its funny name and sometimes akward interface, I’d say I’m a fan. I especially love the option to e-mail yourself the results after the trip (see below.) There’s also a link to interface with google earth so you could relive that infamous ride around the block.

After many an error message, I’ve finally got a working chart representing bank failures in the United States, by state, by year through September 4, 2009 (if it loads it is pretty dramatic).

The Google Visualization tool sometimes takes awhile to load.

Ohio’s Oldest Pharmacy – Hillsboro, Ohio

Ohio's Oldest Pharmacy

Between a bakery and a bank, this sign marks the spot of Ohio’s oldest pharmacy in Hillsboro, Ohio. The location is now an antique offering advertising signs and pharmacy collectibles. Looking through the windows, it looks like the last pharmacist just turned off the lights back in 1964 leaving more then 100 years of store in place.

Google street views are not available for Hillsboro to confirm, but this should be the correct information about the store.
